Phonics

At Westminster Primary, we use ‘Letters and Sounds’ to teach synthetic phonics daily. In addition to this we use ‘Jolly Phonics’ actions to enhance the teaching of phonics.

Phonological awareness is key to children developing their language acquisition skills in this early stage. In Nursery the children are taught each aspect of Phase 1 and move towards Phase 2 by the end of the summer term.

In Reception, Phase 1 is initially recapped and then Phase 2 is taught. By the end of the Summer, the majority of the children are working at Phase 4 and above. Children are taught to blend and segment, developing their skills to become confident readers and writers.

Children are assessed each half term on the phase that they are currently at. Our practitioners are then able to plan next steps, interventions and opportunities for the children to develop their phonic knowledge. In Reception, children are selected to come to an after school ‘Phonics Club’ to help boost their phonics and confidence throughout the year
