English
We aim for our English curriculum to spark a curiosity to learn and inspire children to develop a lifelong love of reading and writing. Our novel-based approach enables children to develop the expertise to read and write for a range of purposes.
By using whole-class texts that are most relevant to our pupils, teachers map out the sequence of a unit and decide upon strategies to teach. During each block, three genres of writing will be taught and within each lesson, we aim to give the children the opportunity develop their vocabulary and reading/writing skills by engaging with a range high-quality texts which are almost always linked to the whole-class text.
Phonics Scheme
At Westminster Primary, we use ‘Letters and Sounds’ to teach synthetic phonics daily. In addition to this we use ‘Jolly Phonics’ actions to enhance the teaching of phonics.
